Preventing Gum Disease

At every check up, Dr. Cardinale and Dr. Moody pay close attention to your oral health. Not only do they clean each tooth to prevent cavities, but they also look  for signs of developing gum disease. Many patients may not know the symptoms of gum disease or what causes it but it’s important to stay informed so that your mouth can stay healthy!

Gum disease is caused by inflammation of the gums caused by dental plaque buildup at the gum line, otherwise known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that usually is treatable with regular brushing and flossing. Gingivitis symptoms can include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Receding or tender gums
  • Bad breath

At the gingivitis stage, gum disease can still be reversed since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. However, if left untreated, a more serious gum disease can develop and can only be cured by a professional.

The good news is that by doing a few simple things every day, you can help prevent gum disease. Along with brushing and flossing every day (yes, every day!) it’s important to avoid any tobacco products and eat a healthy diet. Also, remember to schedule regular appointments with your dentist for cleanings and checkups. Dr. Cardinale and Dr. Moody are always looking to continue to increase their knowledge by researching the latest technology and studies regarding gum disease. Our office has new periodontal charting technology, the Florida Probe, as well as a Waterlase, which supports gum therapy treatment.
